About the Site

arctic rhythms is set up so my friends and family can have a look at some of the snapshots I've taken from places I've been.  And hopefully to give them a bit of info on the subjects in the process.  For many of the pictures I've provided coordinates which are ready to be copied and pasted directly into your favorite maps app, like Google Earth.  A Google Maps link can be found next to each of these, but IMHO Google Maps is not nearly as user-friendly or as good as Google Earth.

Some of the pictures are from a 3-megapixel Kodak Ph.D. ("push here, dummy") camera, but most are taken with a Canon 20D.  While not a photographer, I do enjoy taking pictures.  So much so that I now actually own one very nice lens—the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM.  I can't wait to try it out.  Needless to say, the 20D pictures currently on the website were shot with bargain-basement lenses.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The only filters I own are UVs and Polarizers for each of the lenses, and I still more often than not forget to twirl the Polarizer when I'm shooting.  I've discovered a dire need for a graduated neutral density filter, but haven't gotten around to ordering one yet.  I recently threw out every shot of Great Falls at sunset because the sky was unrecoverably white.  But, hey, the falls looked awesome!  Looks like I'll have to start using some DRI techniques until I have a proper filter.  As one of the photographers I've recently met has warned, "Welcome to the obsession."

Cheers,
Trish
